Hearty Lentil Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 to 3 lb. beef shank
    3 carrots, chopped
    3 medium potatoes, diced
    2 turnips, diced (optional)
    1 large onion, chopped
    3 stalks celery, including tops, chopped
    1 large c. tomatoes (I use stewed tomatoes, 1 can Italian)
    5 c. water
    5 beef bouillon cubes
    2 tsp. basil
    1/2 lb. lentils
    salt and pepper to taste
    1 1/2 c. cabbage, chopped
Preparation
    Place the ingredients in a slow cooker except the cabbage. Stew for 8 to 9 hours on low setting.
    Remove bones and cut meat into soup.
    Turn the slow cooker to high and add the cabbage. Cook 30 to 40 minutes longer.
    Serves 6 to 8.
    Freezes well.
