Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. sliced cucumbers
    8 medium to large onions
    5 c. vinegar
    5 c. sugar
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    2 tsp. whole celery seed
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
Preparation
    Put cucumbers and
    onions
    in large kettle.
    Cover with 1/2 cup salt and
    then\twith
    crushed ice.
    Let stand 3 hours. Drain. Mix and
    heat
    remaining
    ingredients.
    Bring to boil, but do not boil.
    Add\tcucumber
    and onions.
    Place at once in hot sterilized jars and seal.
    Makes 8 pints.
