1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. lukewarm water
Preparation
-
Sift flour, salt, sugar, baking soda and baking powder.
Add shortening and use pastry as for pie crust.
Add yeast mixed in lukewarm water and thoroughly dissolved according to package directions.
Add buttermilk and knead with hands until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Put dough in bowl, cover tightly to avoid drying out and set in refrigerator until ready to use.
Dough can be used at once, but it is better if left in refrigerator overnight or until well chilled before handling. Properly stored in refrigerator, dough remains fresh 8 to 10 days; keeps a month in freezer.
