Date Loaf Candy - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 c. sugar
    1 small can milk
    1 box dates (16 oz.)
    1 c. pecans
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 tsp. salt
Preparation
    Cook sugar and milk until it forms a soft ball when dropped in cold water.
    Add chopped dates; cook slowly until they are dissolved.
    Remove from stove; beat until thick and creamy.
    Add nuts and vanilla; turn mixture at once onto a cloth which has been wrung out of cold water.
    Roll in cloth.
    When cool, unroll and slice into 3/4-inch pieces.
