Ingredients

3 c. all-purpose flour
1/3 c. sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
3/4 tsp. salt
3/4 c. firm butter, cut in small pieces
3/4 c. chopped dates or currants
1 tsp. grated orange peel
1 c. buttermilk
approximately 1 Tbsp. cream or milk
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon, mixed with 2 Tbsp. sugar
Preparation

In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt until thoroughly blended.
Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut butter into flour mixture until it resembles coarse cornmeal.
Stir in dates and orange peel.
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture; add buttermilk all at once.
Stir mixture with a fork until dough cleans the sides of the bowl.
