Refrigerator Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. sugar
    3 c. white vinegar
    1 c. water
    1/2 c. salt
    1 1/3 tsp. alum
    1 1/3 tsp. celery seed
    1 1/3 tsp. mustard seed
    4 large onions, sliced thin
    8 cucumbers, sliced thin (do not pare)
Preparation
    Mix sugar, salt and vinegar and spices.
    Mix well until clear. Wash and sterilize jars.
    Pack cukes and onions into jar.
    Pour syrup over.
    Screw lids tightly.
    Refrigerate at least 5 days before using.
