Basic Buttermilk Biscuits - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. plain flour*
    2 tsp. sugar
    1/4 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 c. shortening
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
    1/4 tsp. salt
    3/4 c. buttermilk
Preparation
    *Note:
    Two cups sifted self-rising flour may be used in place of the plain flour.
    Omit all of the dry ingredients, except the sugar if self-rising flour is used.
