Canada War Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. brown sugar
    2 c. hot water
    1 pkg. raisins
    2 large Tbsp. lard
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. cloves
    1 tsp. salt
Preparation
    Boil all ingredients for 5 minutes after they begin to bubble. When cold, add 3 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder and 1 scant teaspoon soda (dissolved in 1 tablespoon hot water).
    Bake into loaves in a slow oven for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
    You may add nutmeats also if you like.
