Ingredients

1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
4 tsp. cold water
1 c. preserved fruit (blackberries)
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. mace
2 c. flour
2 eggs, separated
Preparation

Cream butter and sugar together until very light; add beaten yolks, water, soda, spices, preserves and flour.
Stir all together.
Beat thoroughly; cut and fold in the beaten whites. Bake in a loaf in a moderate oven about 45 minutes.
Cool.
Cover with plain icing.
Use blackberry, strawberry or raspberry jam.
