Date Loaf - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 small box dates, chopped
    3 c. sugar
    3 Tbsp. white corn syrup
    1 c. pecans, chopped (optional)
    pinch of salt
    1 c. cream or evaporated milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Cook milk and sugar together in a 3-quart saucepan until it reaches 236\u00b0 or will form a soft ball when dropped into cold water.
    Add dates and continue to cook for 5 minutes.
    Remove from heat and stir in nuts, salt and vanilla.
    Let cool a few minutes and then beat until it thickens.
    Form into a roll by hand, about 1 1/2-inches in diameter.
    Wrap in a damp cloth or waxed paper. Chill and slice.
