Steamboat Apple Dumplings - cooking recipe
Ingredients

4 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
apples for 6 dumplings
3 c. flour
1 large Tbsp. lard
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
Preparation

Have oven hot, above 500\u00b0.
Put water and sugar on the stove to boil in large pan.
Pare apples.
Put flour, lard and salt in mixing bowl.
Mix well.
Put soda in buttermilk, stir until it foams.
Add to flour mixture.
(It may take a little more buttermilk.)
Make dumplings.
Drop in boiling syrup.
Let boil 3 or 4 minutes, while mixing 1 teaspoon flour in a little water. Pour around dumplings.
Let boil up well.
Dot with butter. Put in oven and bake until brown.
