Old-Fashioned Stack Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. shortening
    1/2 c. sugar
    1/3 c. sorghum molasses
    1 egg, beaten
    3 1/2 c. flour
    2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. ginger
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 c. buttermilk
Preparation
    Cream shortening, sugar and molasses.
    Add beaten egg and vanilla; blend well.
    Sift together dry ingredients.
    Add alternately with milk, beating smooth each time to make a stiff dough.
    Roll out on floured surface to thickness of pie crust, cut in circles the size of bottom of pie pan.
    Place rounds of dough on cookie sheet; bake in preheated oven at 375\u00b0 for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
    Put together with spicy, well sweetened applesauce while warm.
    Let stand for several hours before serving.
    Makes 9 layers.
