White Cake - cooking recipe

2 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
1 1/4 c. sugar
2/3 c. Crisco
1 c. milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla or almond extract
5 egg whites
1/2 c. sugar
Preparation

Measure the cake flour and 1 1/4 cups sugar into a sifter. Measure the Crisco into mixer.
Measure the milk and vanilla or almond extract into a cup.
Have ready the 5 egg whites, beaten into meringue with 1/2 cup sugar.
(Beat egg whites until foamy. Add 1/2 cup sugar gradually until soft peaks are formed.)
Stir shortening just to soften.
Sift dry ingredients.
Add milk; mix until flour is dampened.
Beat 2 minutes.
