French Onion Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 large onions
    3 Tbsp. butter
    2 Tbsp. flour
    fresh pepper
    1/4 tsp. garlic powder
    1 tsp. sugar
    1/4 tsp. parsley
    1/8 tsp. thyme
    2 (10 1/2 oz.) cans beef consomme
    1 c. dry white wine
    cognac
    seasoned croutons
    1/2 lb. Cheddar cheese, shredded or sliced Provolone
Preparation
    Slice and chop onions.
    Saute in butter until limp.
    Sprinkle with flour, pepper, garlic powder, sugar, parsley and thyme.
    Cook until golden brown.
    Add enough water to consomme to make 1 quart. Combine with onion mixture and add wine; simmer 45 minutes.
    At the last minute, stir in cognac (no more than 2 tablespoons).
