Applesauce Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. shortening
    2 c. sugar
    1 large egg
    1 1/2 c. thick applesauce
    2 tsp. soda
    2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1/2 tsp. allspice
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
    1 c. finely chopped dates or raisins
Preparation
    Cream shortening and sugar together.
    Add egg and blend in applesauce.
    Sift together several times the flour, salt, cinnamon, cloves and allspice.
    Dissolve soda in 1/2 cup boiling water and add to dry ingredients.
    Mix all ingredients together well and pour into a long cake pan.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 35 or 40 minutes.
    Does not need to be iced.
    Will stay moist and fresh as long as there is a piece left.
