Caramel Icing - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1 egg
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 stick butter
    3/4 c. evaporated milk
Preparation
    Melt 1/2 cup sugar in iron skillet, stirring constantly.
    Beat egg slightly.
    To egg, add balance of sugar, butter and milk. Cook slowly until reaches boiling point.
    Add browned sugar while mixture reaches soft ball stage.
    Remove from heat; let cool and beat until right consistency to spread.
    Makes enough for filling and icing for two layer cake.
