Ingredients

1 1/2 lb. dry onions
4 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. salad oil
1 tsp. salt
pinch of sugar
2 Tbsp. flour
2 qt. canned beef bouillon
1/2 c. dry white wine
French bread
Swiss cheese
Preparation

Peel and cut onions into very thin slices.
Melt butter and oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven.
Add onions and simmer over low heat about 15 minutes.
Sprinkle salt and sugar over onions. Raise heat to moderate and cook about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are tender and have turned an even, golden brown.
