Ham Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    6 slices bacon
    1 medium onion, thinly sliced
    1 pound beef shank
    3/4 pound ham, cubed
    6 cups water (or more)
    2 teaspoons salt
    2 16- ounce cans white northern beans
    3 cups cubed potatoes
    1 clove garlic, minced
    1 pound polish sausage, cooked
Preparation
    Fry bacon, crumble and set aside.
    Add onion to 2 tablespoons of the bacon drippings and cook until tender.
    Add beef shank, ham, water and salt.
    Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours.
    Remove meat from shank and dice.
    Skim fat from soup.
    Add beans, potatoes and garlic and simmer 30- minutes covered.
    Add cut sausage, bacon and simmer 15 minutes.\tServes 10-12.
