Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 qt. sliced cucumbers
    8 small white onions
    2 green peppers
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    2 tsp. celery seed
    5 c. vinegar
    1/2 c. coarse salt
Preparation
    Mix sliced cucumbers and salt.
    Cover with cold water (ice water, if possible) and let stand 3 hours.
    Drain well.
    Bring vinegar and spices to boiling.
    Add vegetables; reduce flame and simmer for a few minutes but not until cucumbers are soft.
    Pack in hot jars, leaving 1/2-inch of headspace.
    Adjust for lids. Process in boiling water bath canner.
    Makes 7 pints.
