Homemade Bread Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 qt. sliced cucumbers
    2 bell peppers, chopped in chunks
    3 buds garlic
    1/2 c. salt (no iodized)
    5 c. sugar
    3 c. red vinegar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    1 tsp. alum
Preparation
    Put cucumbers, bell peppers, garlic and salt in ice water and let soak for 3 hours; drain and cool pack in jars.
    Mix remaining ingredients to a good hot boil.
    Pour over cucumbers; seal jars. Have a pot of warm water.
    Sit jars in hot bath.
    Let cook for a full 5 minutes or let water come to a boil, then turn off and let sit for 5 minutes.
