Split Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 ham bone
    8 c. water
    1 lb. dried split green peas
    4 medium size carrots, pared and diced
    1 medium size onion, chopped
    1 bay leaf
    salt and pepper
Preparation
    Combine ham bone, water, peas, carrots, onion and bay leaf in a large kettle.
    Bring to boiling; cover.
    Simmer 1 hour until peas are soft.
    Remove ham bone; cut off bits of meat and add to soup.
    Taste and season with salt and pepper if needed.
    Remove bay leaf.
