Mom'S Christmas Fudge - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. sugar
    1 c. milk
    1/2 c. butter
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/4 c. candied cherries, chopped
    1/4 c. chopped walnuts
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Put sugar, milk, butter and salt into large saucepan.
    Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
    Cook at moderate rate, stirring occasionally, until it forms a soft ball.
    Remove from heat immediately and set pan in cold water.
    Don't stir or beat until candy is thick, creamy and loses its shine.
    When at setting point, add cherries and nuts and fold in quickly.
    Pour into buttered 8-inch pan and let stand at room temperature until firm. Cut into squares.
    Makes 2 1/2 pounds.
