Garlic Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 qt. cucumbers
    4 medium onions, chopped
    1/3 c. salt
    3 c. vinegar
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
Preparation
    Cover cucumbers, onions and salt with ice; let soak 3 hours. Pour off water. Mix remaining ingredients. Add cucumbers and onions to vinegar mixture. Bring to a boil.
    Boil 5 or 10 minutes. Fill hot jars and add 1 clove garlic, 1 sprig dill or 1 teaspoon dill seed. Seal jars and let stand for a few days.
