Braised Onion Sauce - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 lb. unsalted butter
    1 1/2 lb. onions, peeled and sliced (about 6 medium onions)
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    1/4 c. Madeira wine
    grated cheese
    3/4 to 1 lb. pasta
Preparation
    Melt butter.
    Add onions and cook them over medium heat until they are soft and transparent.
    Stir in the sugar; reduce the heat and cook, very slowly for about 1 hour.
    Stir in the wine; cook briefly and pour over cooked pasta.
    Sprinkle with grated cheese.
