Layer Salad - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 head lettuce, broken in small pieces
    1 c. diced celery
    1/2 c. diced green pepper
    1 medium onion, diced
    1 can water chestnuts, drained and diced
    1 can Le Sueur peas, drained
    5 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)
    2 c. mayonnaise
    1 to 2 Tbsp. sugar
    4 oz. Cheddar cheese, shredded
    1/2 pkg. dry Italian dressing mix
Preparation
    Layer first 7 ingredients in order given.
    Combine mayonnaise and sugar.
    Spread evenly over top of salad.
    Sprinkle on dressing.
    Sprinkle with cheese.
    Cover and refrigerate 8 to 12 hours.
    Toss before serving.
