Same Day Sauerbraten - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 to 5 lb. pot roast or stew meat
    3/4 c. water
    3/4 c. vinegar
    salt to taste
    1 1/2 tsp. ground pepper
    3 Tbsp. brown sugar
    1/8 tsp. ground cloves and allspice
    1 tsp. ground ginger
    3/4 c. chopped onion
    1 bay leaf
Preparation
    Brown meat in heavy pot; drain off fat and add 3/4 cup water. Cover and simmer 1 hour.
    Remove meat and cut in 1/2-inch slices and return to pot.
    In another pan, boil 3/4 cup water and remaining ingredients.
    Use seasonings to taste.
    Pour over meat; cover and simmer until fork-tender (about 1 1/2 hours).
    Add water if necessary.
    Thicken with flour and water mixture off heat. Simmer until flour is cooked, stirring often.
    Serve over rice.
