Ingredients

2/3 c. soft shortening
1/2 c. butter (for flavor)
1 3/4 c. sugar
3 c. cake flour
3/4 tsp. salt
3 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/3 c. milk
2 tsp. vanilla
4 egg whites (or 1/2 c.) which have been stiffly beaten
Preparation

Cream first 3 ingredients together until fluffy.
Sift together next 3 ingredients.
Stir in alternately with milk and vanilla.
Fold in egg whites.
Pour into two well-greased and floured layer cake pans.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 30 to 35 minutes.
