Manhattan Clam Chowder - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    5 strips bacon (whole)
    2 1/2 c. onions, chopped
    1 1/2 c. carrots, cubed
    1 c. celery
    2 Tbsp. parsley
    2 c. potatoes, diced
    4 small cans clams (and juice)
    1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes
    1 bay leaf
    1 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. thyme
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    6 c. water
    1 to 2 Tbsp. sugar
Preparation
    Cook bacon (leave whole). Saute onions in drippings. Add rest of ingredients and cook until vegetables are tender.
    Add clams. Heat thoroughly. Remove bacon and serve.
