Layered Vegetable Salad - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 head lettuce, torn into small bite size pieces
    1/2 c. green or red onions
    1/2 c. chopped celery
    1 green pepper
    10 oz. pkg. frozen peas, thawed and drained
    1 c. mayonnaise or salad dressing
    2 tsp. sugar
    2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
    10 slices crumbled bacon or 1/2 c. bacon bits
    8 oz. can water chestnuts, sliced
Preparation
    In large bowl, layer lettuce and onions.
    Spoon 1/2 cup mayonnaise evenly on top.
    Layer celery, green pepper and peas. Spread remaining mayonnaise over top.
    Sprinkle sugar, cheese and bacon over top.
    Cover and refrigerate 8 hours.
    Add water chestnuts.
    Toss before serving.
    Makes 8 to 10 servings.
