Ingredients

2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. soft shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. molasses
1 egg yolk
Preparation

Sift flour, salt, soda, baking powder, ginger, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg together.
Beat shortening, sugar and molasses until creamy.
Beat in egg yolk.
Blend in flour mixture.
Chill dough for 1 hour.
Roll dough 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick on lightly floured surface.
Cut into shapes.
Place 1/2-inch apart
on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes. Cookies may be decorated before or after baking, as desired.
