Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    5 qt. sliced medium cucumbers (unpeeled)
    1 Tbsp. alum (powdered)
    4 medium white onions, sliced
    2 large green peppers, chopped
    3 cloves garlic (whole)
    1/3 c. coarse salt (ice cream salt)
    5 c. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
    1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
    1 1/2 tsp. mustard seed
    3 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Put cucumbers, onions, peppers, whole garlic and alum in large bowl.
    Add salt and stir well; cover with crushed ice and let stand 3 hours.
    Don't cover the crushed ice and cucumber mixture. After 3 hours, drain the mixture and rinse well.
    Place in pot, then add sugar, turmeric, celery seed, mustard seed and vinegar. Heat just to a boil, but do not boil.
    Seal in jars.
    Will make 8 pints.
