Seven Layer Salad - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 medium head lettuce, shredded
    1/2 c. coarsely chopped celery
    1/2 c. coarsely chopped red or green pepper
    3/4 c. coarsely chopped Spanish onion
    1 can green peas, drained well
    1 c. mayonnaise
    1 Tbsp. sugar
    1 1/2 c. coarsely shredded cheese
    4 strips bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled or 1/4 c. imitation bacon bits
Preparation
    In large bowl, arrange lettuce, celery, peppers, onion and peas in layers.
    Spread mayonnaise evenly over peas.
    Sprinkle with sugar, then with Cheddar cheese.
    Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.
    Sprinkle with bacon just before serving.
