Norwegian Betasuppe - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 lb. yellow split peas
    1 lb. ham hocks or 1/2 c. finely chopped ham
    1 onion, finely chopped
    1 Tbsp. thyme
    10 c. water
    2 c. each: potatoes, diced, rutabaga and celery root
    1 1/2 c. chopped leek
    1 Tbsp. salt
Preparation
    Combine peas, ham hocks or ham, onion, thyme and water.
    Add potatoes, rutabaga, celery root, leek and salt.
    Combine ingredients in a large Dutch oven and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Add vegies and salt and cook for another 30 to 45 minutes.
    If using ham hocks, remove, trim, cut finely and return to the soup!
