Minestrone With Sausage - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 lb. Italian sausage
    2 1/2 to 3 lb. beef shanks
    8 c. water
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    1/8 tsp. pepper
    1 bay leaf
    1 c. sliced zucchini
    1 c. sliced carrots
    1 c. chopped celery
    4 oz. (1 c.) uncooked shell macaroni
    1/2 c. chopped onion
    1 tsp. basil leaves, crushed
    1 garlic clove, minced
    28 oz. can tomatoes, undrained and cut up
    16 oz. can kidney beans, undrained
    8 oz. can tomato sauce
Preparation
    If sausage comes in casing, remove casing.
    In 6-quart saucepot, brown sausage and break into small pieces.
    Remove sausage from saucepot; drain on paper towel.
    Refrigerate sausage.
