Sauerbraten - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 lb. bottom round steak or beef shoulder
    garlic (if desired)
    2 tsp. salt
    pepper
    2 c. vinegar
    2 c. water
    1/2 c. sliced onion
    2 bay leaves
    1 tsp. peppercorns
    1/4 c. sugar
Preparation
    Rub meat with a cut surface of garlic, salt and pepper.
    Place in bowl.
    Heat vinegar, water, onion, bay leaves, peppercorns and sugar together, but do not boil.
    Pour hot mixture over meat; cover bowl and let stand in cool compartment of refrigerator 4 to 8 days, turning meat each day.
