Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 gal. cucumbers
    1 pt. salt
    2 Tbsp. powdered alum
    1/2 gal. vinegar
    1/2 gal. sugar
    pickling spice
Preparation
    Dissolve salt in 1 gallon boiling water and pour over cukes. Let stand 5 to 7 days.
    Rinse.
    Dissolve 2 tablespoons alum in 1 gallon boiling water.
    Let stand 24 hours.
    Rinse and split cukes (no matter how small); repeat 2 tablespoons alum in 1 gallon boiling water and let stand 24 hours.
    Rinse thoroughly.
    Prepare equal parts sugar and vinegar; bring to a boil.
    Pour over cukes. Let stand 24 hours.
    Pour off and add equal parts of sugar to vinegar solution.
    Bring to a boil and pour over cukes that have been packed in jars.
    Seal.
