Five-Star Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 pkg. (1 lb.) dried large white navy beans
    6 c. boiling water
    1 shank end fully cooked ham (about 3 lb.)
    4 c. shredded cabbage (about 1 lb.)
    2 c. thinly sliced carrots (about 7 medium)
    1 large onion, chopped (1 c.)
    1 c. chopped celery
    1 clove garlic, minced
    1 (12 oz.) pkg. smoked sausage links, sliced thin
    1 can (about 1 lb.) tomatoes
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    1 c. elbow macaroni (half an 8 oz. pkg.)
Preparation
    Step 1:
    Pick over beans, rinse and place in a large bowl. Pour the boiling water over, cover and let stand 1 hour.
