For the crust: Combine the flour, 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, the butter, the shortening and the zest. Pulse until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add 3 Tablespoons of the orange juice and pulse until incorporated. If the dough does not hold together, add additional orange juice pulsing until just incorporated. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for two minutes. Gather the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a 13-inch round. Fit dough into a 9 - 10-inch tart pan with a removable bottom. Trim excess dough, prick the bottom of the tart shell with a fork and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375 F.
Line the tart shell with foil or parchment paper and fill with pie weights, beans or rice. Bake for 10 - 14 minutes. Remove from oven and remove foil and weights. Reduce oven temperature to 325 F.
Meanwhile, combine the avocado, the lime juice, 1/2 cup granulated sugar and the eggs in the bowl of a food processor. Puree until the mixture is smooth, about 30 seconds. Transfer mixture to a medium bowl. Whisk in cream, salt, cinnamon and cloves. Pour the filling into the tart shell, return to oven and bake until the filling is set, about 25 - 35 minutes. Remove from oven, set tart on rack and cool completely.
At serving time remove outer ring and slice tart into wedges. If desired, garnish each portion with whipped cream and/or orange slices.
