Dauphinoise Potatoes - cooking recipe

1 clove garlic, peeled and halved
1 kg potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
200 g Gruyere or Cheddar, grated
1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
200 ml whipping cream
Preparation

Preheat the oven to 400\u00b0F. Rub an 11 x 7 inch ovenproof serving dish with the garlic, then grease well. Arrange the potatoes in layers in the dish, sprinkling each layer with cheese and seasoning with salt and black pepper. Finish with a layer of cheese.
Stir the nutmeg into the cream and season with salt and black pepper, then pour evenly over the potatoes. Bake for about 1 hour, until the potatoes are tender, covering with aluminum foil if the top is browning too quickly.
