Ingredients

4 oz granulated sugar
6 None cloves
1 None cinnamon stick
2 None star anise
1 None vanilla pod
2 cups water
2 None apples, peeled, cored and cut into wedges
4 None ripe pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges
2/3 lb blackberries
Preparation

Place the sugar, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, vanilla pod and 2 cups water in a saucepan. Bring gently to a boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer over a low heat for 5 minutes.
Add the apples and pears and simmer for 5 minutes, or until just tender. Add the blackberries and simmer for a further 4 minutes. Allow to cool. Just before serving, remove the cloves, cinnamon stick, star anise and vanilla pod.
