Baked Croque Monsieur Hors D'Oeuvres - cooking recipe

2 tsp butter
1 1/2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 pinch grated nutmeg
12 slices bread, toasted
12 slices ham
2 oz Gruyere cheese, grated
Preparation

Preheat the oven to 400\u00b0F. Grease 6 small ramekins, around 3 1/2 inches in diameter, with butter and place on a baking sheet. Melt the butter in a small pan then stir in the flour and cook for 30 seconds. Gradually stir in the milk and simmer for 5-8 mins, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from the heat. Season and add nutmeg. Set aside.
Use a 3 inch cookie cutter to cut 12 circles from toast and 12 circles from the ham. Spoon a little of the sauce in the base of each ramekin then top with a circle of toast, followed by a circle of ham and a spoonful of the sauce. Repeat the layers once more then sprinkle the cheese on the top. Bake for 10-15 mins until the top is golden and bubbling. Serve immediately.
