Russian Style Pickled Herring - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 herring fillets
    2 small onions, sliced
    1 bay leaf
    1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1/2 - 3/4 cup vinegar
    1 cup cold water
Preparation
    Soak herring for 3 or 4 hours in cold water.
    Wash in cold water and cut into cubes.
    Prepare a marinade with the remaining ingredients and marinate for 1-2 days.
    Drain and serve.
