Split Pea Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 ham bone (leftovers)
    3 cups dried whole green peas, split
    4 quarts water
    1 cup onion, chopped
    1 cup celery, chopped (with leaves)
    2 cups carrots, diced
    1 garlic clove, minced
    1 bay leaf
    salt and pepper
Preparation
    Simmer ham bone with peas in water for 2 hours.
    Add remaining ingredients.
    Continue to cook for about 1 hour.
