Ingredients

1/4 c. margarine
3 large onions, sliced thin
3/4 tsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. flour
2 1/2 c. water
1/2 c. red cooking wine
2 (10 1/2 oz.) cans beef broth
1 loaf French bread
4 slices Swiss cheese
Preparation

Preheat oven to 425\u00b0.
In 4-quart saucepan over medium heat, in hot margarine, cook onions and sugar for 10 minutes.
Stir in flour until well blended with onions and the pan juices.
Add water, wine and beef broth.
Heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low. Simmer 10 minutes. Cut 4 (1-inch thick) slices of bread.
Toast in oven.
Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls and place 1 slice of bread on top.
Lay Swiss over bread slice.
Place soup bowls on jelly roll pan for easier handling.
Bake at 425\u00b0 for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.
