Caramel Icing For Black Walnut Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. black walnuts
    3 c. sugar
    1 c. sweet milk
    1/2 c. butter or margarine
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/8 tsp. soda
    1/4 c. sugar (take out of the 3 c. sugar)
Preparation
    Brown and make into caramel first by putting 1/4 cup sugar into iron skillet.
    Heat until sugar browns, stirring constantly. Add 1/4 cup of water to make syrup. Add to other ingredients. Boil briskly for 4 minutes, stirring constantly and cooking to soft ball stage.
    Cool in ice water, beating constantly.
    Add vanilla and nuts. Spread between layers on sides and top of cake.
