Ingredients

1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. light corn syrup
2 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter or margarine
1 c. chopped nuts
Preparation

Combine buttermilk and soda in heavy 3-quart saucepan.
Let sit 20 minutes.
Add sugar and corn syrup.
Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves.
When mixture boils, add butter and cook, stirring occasionally, until it reaches soft ball stage (236\u00b0 to 238\u00b0 on a candy thermometer).
It will
have turned a medium brown color.
Remove from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm (110\u00b0), then beat until mixture loses its gloss and starts to thicken.
Stir in nuts and turn into a buttered 8-inch square pan until firm.
Makes approximately 1 1/2 pounds.
