Date Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. boiling water
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. sugar
    1/4 c. shortening
    1 egg, beaten
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    Pour boiling water over dates and baking soda.
    Set aside. Combine remaining ingredients.
    Add dates to combined ingredients. Pour into a 9 x 13-inch pan.
    Bake in moderate oven for 35 minutes.
