Doughboys - cooking recipe

Ingredients
1 cake or 1 pkg. yeast
    1/3 c. warm water
    2 c. milk
    5 Tbsp. shortening
    1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 egg, slightly beaten
    6 1/4 c. sifted flour
Preparation
Dissolve yeast in water; heat milk and shortening in saucepan until milk is scalded and shortening melted.
Blend together sugar and salt; add to hot milk mixture in large bowl.
Cool to lukewarm; blend in egg and yeast.
    Gradually add flour.
Mix thoroughly. Grease top and cover.
Let rise until double in bulk (about 1 hour).
Divide dough in half; roll out to 12 x 9-inch rectangle. Cut into 4 x 2-inch strips.
Cut each strip twice about halfway across on 4-inch side.
Spread apart so sides do not touch.
Place on floured board and cover.
    Let rise 45 minutes.
Fry in deep fat until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes each side.
    Drain on paper towels.
Dip in thin syrup made with powdered sugar, milk and a little vanilla.
