Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 lb. cucumbers (1 1/2 inch diameter)
    1/3 c. pickling salt
    5 c. cold water
    1/2 lb. onion
    2 c. vinegar
    1 2/3 c. sugar
    1 tsp. celery seed
    2 tsp. powdered mustard
    1 tsp. ginger
    1/4 tsp. turmeric
    1/8 tsp. mace
    1/2 tsp. red pepper
Preparation
    Use
    fresh green cucumbers.
    Wash.
    Remove stem end and slice 1/4-inch
    thick.
    Put into an enamelware or glass bowl. Sprinkle with
    salt\tand
    add
    water.
    Cover and let stand 24 hours.
    Turn into
    a colander and drain well.
    Put into large enamelware
    pot; add
    onions
    (sliced
    1/8-inch
    thick), then vinegar,
    sugar
    and spices.
    Stir to mix well.\tHeat to boiling, then simmer 3 to 4 minutes.
