Ruby Pears - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    7 whole pears, peeled, but with stems left on
    1 c. dry red wine
    1 (16 oz.) can jellied cranberry sauce
    juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/4 c. sugar or to taste
    1/2 stick cinnamon
    1-inch piece of vanilla bean
Preparation
    Select pears with good, whole stems.
    Peel in vertical strips, from stem to blossom end.
    Strain the cranberry sauce through a sieve into a large saucepan or enameled cast-iron casserole (deep).
    Stir in remaining ingredients, except peas, to make a syrup.
